While ContainerKing® is based in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, we feel it’s important to acknowledge the town’s current challenges which have not been at all addressed by an unimaginative and unambitious North Lincolnshire Council. Over the years, Scunthorpe has struggled with stagnation, and from our experience, we believe the area is in a prolonged period of decline. Despite its rich industrial history, particularly in steel production, the town’s economic development and lack of opportunity combined with high taxes Scunthorpe has not kept pace with other regions in the UK despite the fact that North Lincolnshire Council believes that North Lincolnshire (except in our opinion Scunthorpe) in its entirety is:

Unlike cities such as Grimsby, Lincoln, Doncaster, Sheffield, and Hull—each of which has undergone significant redevelopment over the last few decades—Scunthorpe’s progress has been slow and, at times, embarrassing. Visitors often comment that the town feels stuck in the 1980s, struggling to move forward with its once-dominant steel industry now in decline.

A Strategic Location Despite Challenges

However, Scunthorpe does have one key advantage: its location. The town’s well-connected road network allows us to easily serve high-demand areas like Grimsby, Lincoln, Sheffield, Doncaster, Goole, and Hull, all within a 25-minute drive. Key routes include:

M180 (connecting west to east)
M18 (north to south)
A15 (direct route to Lincoln)

Additionally, the Humber Bridge, opened in 1981, provides an essential link to Hull, a thriving city with a strong economy, making it easier for us to serve our broader customer base.

Scunthorpe’s Industrial Legacy and Environmental Impact

Historically, Scunthorpe has been known for its ironstone reserves, first mined in 1859, which led to the growth of its steel industry. Unfortunately, the steel sector has been in decline for a generation. Today, British Steel Scunthorpe is still one of the UK’s biggest industrial polluters, as reported by the Environment Agency. While the town has its challenges, it remains an excellent strategic base for our operations, and we continue to serve a wide range of customers across North Lincolnshire and beyond.

Liz Smith MBE (Betty Gleadale) – Acclaimed film and TV actress, known for roles in The Vicar of Dibley and The Royle Family.

Kevin Keegan – Although born in Armthorpe, Doncaster, Keegan played for Scunthorpe United before being signed by Bill Shankly for Liverpool.

Ray Clemence – Born in Skegness, Clemence began his career at Scunthorpe United (1965) before moving to Liverpool under Shankly’s management in 1967.
